About 90% of the energy used by your washing machine goes to heat the water. For most loads of laundry, a cold wash will suffice. There are really only two occasions when hot should be used: to remove some tough stains & when washing bed linens.

By choosing to use cold instead of hot water when washing laundry, you can save upwards of $300 and 330 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
